Four McNair Scholars traveled to Chicago on September 7, 2016 along with Heather Pickett, McNair Program Director and Lindsay Haukkala, Program Secretary. The purpose of the trip was to visit universities in Chicago that have graduate programs of interest to the students, particularly the University of Illinois Chicago.

The trip was also an opportunity for the students to get to know Chicago and imagine what it would be like to attend graduate school in a large urban area. The group took an architectural boat tour of the city as an introduction to the history and geography of the city.
They took a walking food tour in the Old Town and Gold Coast areas, visiting seven different restaurants as well as a tea shop. Lindsay and Shelby went to the top of the John Hancock building to enjoy the view of the city and split a treat at the Signature Room on the 95th floor.
The deep dish Chicago style pizza at Gino’s East had some students ready to commit to graduate school in the city!
The group visited Shedd Museum for an evening of Jazzin’ at the Shedd. Animals, jazz and food made for a winning combination!
Walking through Millenium Park is always a treat:

Andre visited three law schools in the city and Shelby was able to tour the UIC Nursing campus. It was a valuable experience for the students to be able to get a taste of big-city life and a sense of what it might be like to attend an urban graduate school. A fun and educational time was had by all!
