Recruiting the McNair Class of 2013

It’s that time again:  time to recruit a new group of dedicated McNair Scholars!  Applications are due on November 4th for this year’s cohort.

Heather, Jenny and Terri have been working hard to get the word out to students who may qualify for the program.  We have hung posters all over NMU, attended the meetings of clubs and organizations on campus, solicited names of talented students from academic departments, worked through lists of students who may qualify from SSS, and met individually with prospective candidates to answer questions they have about the program and how it might help them.

Do you know any sophomores or juniors who you could picture as tomorrow’s college professors and researchers?  First generation, low income students who may just need a little extra boost to propel them into graduate school and beyond?  Students from groups who are underrepresented in graduate school who have the potential and drive to pursue their career goals through graduate school education?  You might want to tell them about McNair and encourage them to apply!

The application can be downloaded on our website,, where there is more information about eligibility and the benefits of being a McNair Scholar.

In the last three years, 47% or our graduates have been accepted to graduate programs throughout the country, with 56% receiving full funding packages for their graduate studies.  The research experience that McNair students gain as undergraduates, along with the opportunities to attend and present their research findings at regional and national conferences, can make all the difference in gaining admittance to graduate programs.  The assistance we can offer with GRE prep, graduate admissions and financial matters doesn’t hurt either!

Students are always welcome to learn more about how to apply to become a part of the highly competitive McNair Program by stopping by the McNair office at 2807 West Science.

November 4 is the due date!  Spread the word!
